How to Recognize It

Breadcrumbing has a distinct pattern: contact that appears just as you're about to give up. The person maintains just enough presence to keep themselves in your life as an option, without investing in anything real:

  • Sporadic texts after long silences, often late at night
  • Enthusiastic plans that never materialize
  • Warm responses to your messages but never initiating themselves
  • Resurfacing with attention whenever you start to pull away

What to Do About It

The most useful question is: does this person's behavior actually match what they say they want? Someone genuinely interested makes plans, follows through, and maintains consistent contact. If you find yourself waiting, analyzing, and getting occasional crumbs of attention, the pattern itself is the answer.

You can address it directly: "I'm not sure where things stand between us." Their response — or lack of one — tells you what you need to know. Don't accept a level of investment you wouldn't accept from anyone else just because the crumbs are from someone you like.
